Causal Machine Learning for Prescriptive Analytics in Sports

Predictive analytics in sports helps estimating key performance metrics, but prescriptive analytics goes a step further by recommending concrete actions to optimize outcomes. In this talk, I will discuss how causal machine learning can be used to personalize training strategies in professional soccer. Using data from a Belgian Pro League club, we developed models to predict players' rating of perceived exertion (RPE) and explored counterfactual analysis to prescribe optimal training interventions. By leveraging methods such as the Counterfactual Recurrent Network (CRN), we aim to move beyond correlation-based insights and towards data-driven decision-making that enhances player performance and minimizes injury risk.

About the Lunch Talks

The Biomina Lunch Talks are an initiative of a number of young researchers in the biomina network and is sponsored by the Flemish Government.

We aim to stimulate the interaction between researchers from different disciplines who encounter bioinformatics and computational biology, and consequently we focus on a broad and multidisciplinary public. With this informal medium we would like to provide a platform where knowledge and experience can be presented and exchanged, across partners from both academia and industry.

In this manner we have had the pleasure to welcome speakers from various institutes in and outside Antwerp, such as VIB, UZA, KULeuven, Johnson & Johnson. Even international speakers, from Ethiopia, USA, South-Africa, ... have been presenting their expertise!

These sessions provide a great opportunity for young researchers to acquaint themselves with new ideas and methods in the field of bioinformatics and medical informatics!.
